How to Get Started
You will need a design to build a deck. Some hardware stores offer online designing platforms if you wish to design the deck yourself. Architects, engineers, and architectural designers may offer services in the scope of deck designs. Verify that your designer is certified by an Ontario governing body and that they abide by the Ontario Building Code. They may also submit applications for a building permit and building inspections on your behalf.
- Architects – Ontario Association of Architects, Architect OAA

- Architectural Designers – Government of Ontario, Building Code Identification Number (BCIN)
Is a Permit Required to Build a Deck in Ontario?
A permit is required if:
- The deck is taller than 24 inches,
- A structural renovation will be made to an existing deck, or
- The deck is independent of the house (i.e. the middle of the yard), has a walking surface greater than 10 square meters, and is taller than 24 inches.
How to Apply for a Construction Permit in Ontario
You must fill out an Application for a Permit to Construct or Demolish. This application can be submitted electronically or in person to your local government. Please visit your municipality’s website for more information specific to your location. The application form can be found here.
When is a Building Inspection Necessary?
A building inspection is required at three stages in the construction process.
- Excavation/Footing Inspection: This inspection will be completed before the concrete is poured.
- Structural Wood Frame Inspection: To be completed once the framing is installed (i.e. joist, beams, posts).
- Final Building Inspection: Required once the deck and guards/railings are complete.
What Materials Should be Used to Build a Deck in Ontario?
Pressure-treated lumber is popular in Ontario due to its affordability and durability. This wood has been treated with chemical preservatives to protect against rot, insects, and warping.
Cedar decking is commonly used in Ontario due to the wood’s natural resistance to rot and insect damage. The price of cedar depends on the grade of lumber; cedar boards with minimal knots will be the most expensive, whereas cedar boards with more knots will be more affordable.
Composite decking is a growing trend in Ontario because it is environmentally friendly and requires little maintenance. This material is made of wood fibres and recycled plastics and provides the look and feel of real lumber without rotting, warping, or attracting insects.
How to Maintain a Deck in Ontario
Maintaining a deck will vary depending on the material used to construct the deck. In general, all decks should be swept, cleared of snow, and checked for mould periodically. Pressure-treated decks and cedar decks should be power washed, sanded, and stained every few years. These tools can typically be rented at your local hardware store.
